Size of Japan

The size of Japan compared to it’s neighbors China and Russia, and it’s no.1 ally the United States, is very small. However what Japan lacks in size it makes up for in economic power, beauty, and ease of transport. The size of Japan allows you to travel the country by train, bullet train, plane, or even bus relatively quickly. This is great for tourists who wish to see the many stunning places Japan has on offer.

Despite the size of Japan, the landscape is very varied. Mountainous regions, flat plains, swamps, even a small desert! One gem often overlooked by visiting tourists is Okinawa. A chain of small islands 2.5 hours from the mainland of Japan, Okinawa is a tropical paradise. While still boasting the best of all things ‘Japanese’, Okinawa also has its own special culture and is somewhat unique from the rest of Japan. On the other side of the country (not that far given Japan’s size) are the Japanese alps which every year provide world class snow which attracts tourists the world over. Hakuba, Shigakogen, Nozawa Onsen, Niseko, some of these names might sound familiar. They sure are amazing, both in winter and summer!

Tourists often have time restraints which keep them in only one or two places. My suggestion is to go for a few months. A Working Holiday is the best idea. This would allow you to work part time to earn money, and at the same time travel all over Japan. Japan’s size will allow you to do this easily as you can fly from one end of the mainland to the other in less than 2 hours, or to Okinawa from Tokyo in just 2.5! With Jetstar on its way to Japan, domestic air travel is about to get cheaper, so traveling the country will become even more of a breeze!

Resort work is a good way to improve your Japanese, experience the best parts of Japan, and earn a bit of money to use while traveling. Resort jobs at ski resorts and in Okinawa are most common, but perhaps other areas will be available too. After a few months at working at a Japanese resort, set off on an adventure traveling Japan.
